Type 420 stainless steel heat treatment includes annealing, hardening, tempering and stress relief. Preparation for heat treatment includes precleaning, preheating, atmosphere protection, salt bath, and hydrogen embrittlement.
Annealing for ASTM AISI 420 wrought stainless steel.
Hardening for 420 grade stainless steel: Heating to austenitizing temperature 980-1065 °C (1800-1950 °F), quenching medium is air or oil, if the part thickness is > 0.25 in. (6.4 mm), oil quenching should be used. After quenching to room temperature, immediate cold treatment is recommended and the recommended cold treatment temperature is -75±10 °C (-100±20 °F), which can reduce austenite and keep maximum dimensional stability.
AISI 420 steel (SS420) is very brittle under just hardened conditions and usually must be tempered to achieve useful toughness.
The tempering temperature for 420 grade stainless steel after austenitizing: 205-370 °C (400-700 °F). The corresponding tensile strength and Rockwell hardness are 1550-1930 MPa (225-280 ksi) and 48-56 HRC.
If the quenched SS420 does not temper immediately, the stress relief should be carried out quickly.
Straight chrome AISI type 420 steel is very easy to forge into complex shapes.
Filler metal for ARC welding of AISI 420 steel: E/ER420, E/ER308, E/ER309.
To obtain a good weld, it’s better to preheat it to a minimum of 200 °C (390 °F) before welding, and then set the post weld heat treatment to 675-750 °C (1250-1380 °F).
ASTM AISI 420 grade stainless steel (SS 420) is mostly used to manufacture parts resistant to atmospheric, water vapor, water and oxidizing acids.
AISI 420 material (SS420) is used in all kinds of precision machinery, bearings, electrical equipment, instruments, meters, transportation tools, knives, scissors, household appliances, valves, valve components, plunger rods, fittings, guides, parts for chemical plants, shafts, spindles, plastic mold, pumper plunger, cutlery, gears, and rollers.
